UCLan take part in the Preston Guild Trade procession

Trade is at the very heart of the Preston Guild.

Although much has changed, the Trades Procession is the direct descendant of the first processions of traders, craftsmen and merchants going back to at least 1762 (the earliest documentary evidence). In 1992 3,000 people from 123 firms took part in a magnificent procession of 148 imaginatively decorated floats supported by 20 bands.

In 2012 the decorated floats and walkers will represented the current day industries, businesses and public services of the city.

UCLan took part in the procession on Saturday 1st September 2012. With a theme of internationalisation, the centre-piece was a globe held high by the walkers – 60 UCLan academic and support staff who had volunteered to represent the university in this significant historical event.

Walkers also held aloft banners with statements to affirm UCLan’s commitment to internationalisation: ‘Shaping global citizens of the future’, ‘Global campuses – UCLan Preston: UCLan Cyprus: UCLan Thailand’ and ‘Over 120 nationalities among our staff and students’.

UCLan received a warm welcome from people of the procession route and is now set to take part in the much anticipated Torchlight Procession through the city on Saturday 8th September 2012.
